Show Us Your Passion and Commitment for Tenant Rights—You Could Win a $500 Scholarship

Over years of practice… as a business and real estate lawyer serving residents in Southern California, I have seen first-hand the devastating effects of discrimination and other violations of tenant rights. What makes these violations even worse is that tenants are often unaware of their legal rights. Fortunately, those rights can be enforced in a court of law. Standing up to tenant rights violations in court not only strengthens the law, but it also protects tenants from retaliation, eviction, violation of habitability rights, and other illegal acts.

To promote greater awareness of tenant rights, I have created an annual $500 scholarship in honor of my late father, who was also a real estate lawyer, to promote education and vigilance around this issue. My hope is that spreading the word will contribute to more legal protections for tenants. To apply for the scholarship, you must create a video essay that answers the question, “Why is it important for courts to uphold tenant rights?”

Who Is Eligible?

To be eligible for the scholarship, you must be a current student of an accredited college, university, or trade school, or you must have been accepted to an accredited institution.

How Do I Apply?

To apply, you must create a video essay that answers the question, “Why is it important for courts to uphold tenant rights?” The video essay cannot be more than three minutes in length and must be posted on YouTube. Once you have posted your video, email the following information to [email protected]:

  • YouTube video URL
  • Your full name
  • The name of the school you are or will be attending
  • Your mailing address
  • Your phone number

Applications for this scholarship are due each year in mid-December. Applications will be judged based on the creativity of the video essay as well as the persuasiveness of the legal argument that you make. The winner of the scholarship will be notified in January by email, and the one-time $500 scholarship will be immediately distributed to the school.
